Using SQL Import/Export Wizard with Azure databases
(Just a quick post that will hopefully save someone else 30 minutes of googling…)
At work, I log in to various SQL databases hosted on Azure, for which I select “Active Directory – Password” as the method of Authentication.
However, if you open the SQL Server Import and Export Wizard and choose the regular data source ‘SQL Server Native Client 11.0’, this authentication method isn’t available; it’s either SQL login, or Windows login.
If I try and login under Windows, I get:
The operation could not be completed
Windows logins are not supported in this version of SQL Server. (Microsoft SQL Server Native Client 11.0)
What you actually need as the Data Source is .Net Framework Data Provider for SqlServer:
and make sure you fill in the following 5 properties:
- Authentication: select “ActiveDirectoryPassword”
- User ID: (your AD login / email address)
- Data Source: (the name of the Azure database server)
- Initial Catalog: (database name)
- Password: (your AD password)
That’s what worked for me, YMMV! (Good luck!)
